Commercial Nursery Greenhouses are very popular. Legend it that Roman gardeners invented early forms of greenhouse in order to serve the cucumbers at Caesar’s table. Whether its true or not, the Romans are now credited with their building the first greenhouses by digging pits in the earth, adding fires in ordder to generate heat, and covering the pits with translucent sheets of micarock. Ever since then, greenhouses, which are also called glass houses in Europe, have allowed the gardeners the opportunity to grow the fruits, the vegetables and the flowers year round.

During the 15th century, explorers who traveled to New Worlds in search of some treasures brought back the plant specimens which Europeans had never seen. Many roots and berries of the plants were touted as having curative powers, so botanists at this time perfected ways to protect as well as propagate valued plants in the rudimentary greenhouses. By the ending of the 16th century, the basic greenhouse had been invented, but improvements continued to made until Victorian England designed modern greenhouses as they are today.
